A Ghanaian pop star who was extradited back to the UK to face child sex offences has been jailed for 12 years after he admitted two counts of raping a seven-year-old girl.Deeba Akyampong, aged 35, was returned to the UK in July to face allegations that he raped a child under the age of 13 between December 2004 and September 2008 when he was in the UK.Akyampong used to live in Northampton, before he returned to Ghana.It was then that allegations came to light.A warrant was issued for his arrest and he was seized by authorities in Ghana in January this year and was then extradited to the UK, following a lengthy legal fight.The musician, known in Ghana as Deeba, is described as a ‘hip-life’ artist who shot to fame in his homeland with his self-titled song, “Deeba”.Akyampong pleaded guilty to two counts of rape of a child under 13 at Northampton Crown Court this week.He was given two 12-year sentences, to run concurrently.A Northamptonshire Police spokesman said: “It is expected that Akyampong will be deported once he has served his sentence.”He has also been placed on the sex offender’s register.DC Lisa Miller from the police’s child protection team welcomed the sentence.She said: “These offences involved a seven year-old girl and have left her and her family devastated.“I am pleased Akyampong has been handed a substantial sentence that reflects the seriousness of what he did.“I would like to thank the Home Office and British High Commission in Ghana as well as the Ghanaian government for their assistance in his extradition, which has been a great example of excellent co-operation between UK and Ghanaian law enforcement agencies.”
