THE rank hypocrisy of the British political class on the issue of immigration has been exposed from an unusual quarter.
Deputy mayor of Calais Philippe Mignonet has berated our leading politicians for claiming that they wish to clamp down on immigration while failing to take steps that would actually do that.
His town is being overrun by potential illegal immigrants to Britain who are attracted by our country’s readiness to tolerate the unofficial, cash-in-hand employment of workers without documents.
An even bigger draw is the fact that the resources of our welfare state are not confined to people who have paid into the pot but instead can be accessed from day one by new arrivals.
From housing to healthcare little or no preference is accorded to people who have been resident and paying taxes in this country for many years.
Given that English is the world’s second language and that we are already home to immigrant communities from almost every nation the reasons for so many of the world’s poorest people continuing to head in our direction are clear.
From housing to healthcare little or no preference is accorded to people who have been resident and paying taxes in this country for many years
Our politicians lack the will to make life intolerable for those who are here illegally.
New official figures yesterday showed that only six per cent of tip-offs about illegal immigration are even investigated. Mr Mignonet is right to be annoyed but the British people are entitled to be absolutely furious.
